A 19-year-old Indian was arrested and charged by the United States Park Police and the United States Secret Service Uniform Division officers after he crashed into the security barriers near the White House, Washington D.C. on May 22.

The teenager was identified as Sai Varshith Kandula, a Chesterfield, Missouri resident. Preliminary investigation indicated that he intentionally crashed the vehicle into the bollards placed outside Lafayette Park, a minute away from the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The United States Secret Service statement regarding the collision reads, “There were no injuries to any Secret Service or White House personnel and the cause and manner of the crash remain under investigation.” The truck was deemed safe after a preliminary investigation by the D.C. Police Department, Chief of Communications for the Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi said in a tweet.

According to media reports, Kandula planned to "seize power" and gain control of the nation. When asked how he planned to do so, he said he would "kill the President if that's what I have to do and would hurt anyone that would stand in my way."

Charges against Kandula include assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, threatening to kill/kidnap/inflict harm on a President, Vice President, or family member, destruction of federal property, and trespassing.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre who was asked for an update on the situation in a press briefing the following day, however, said little on the matter. “I can share with you that the President was indeed briefed.  He was briefed this morning on what’s known by Secret Service and the Park Police thus far.  He’s relieved that no one was injured last night and grateful to the agents and the law enforcement officer who responded so quickly,” she said, adding that any further queries about the incident should be raised with Secret Service.
