Bhavani Devi creates history at Asian Fencing Championships

The fencer won a historic bronze at the Asian Fencing Championships, making it the first fencing medal for India

Indian fencer Bhavani Devi secured a bronze medal in the women's sabre event at the Asian Fencing Championships 2023, marking India's first-ever medal at the continental meet. The 29-year-old athlete, currently ranked 49th in the world, emerged victorious against reigning world champion and World No. 1 Misaki Emura of Japan in the quarter-finals, with a commanding score of 15-10.

The Indian fencer lost to Uzbekistan’s Zaynab Dayibekova, who went on to claim the gold medal by defeating Jisu Yoon of the Republic of Korea, World No. 28, with a score of 15-9.

Although Devi's accomplishment stands as a momentous achievement, her compatriots Jagmeet Kaur, Rishika Khajuria, and Josna Christy failed to secure medals in the women's sabre event.
