Nita Ambani brings ‘Sound of Music’ to India

In 1959, the musical made a stunning Broadway debut. Since then, "The Sound of Music" has toured more than 100 nations and received numerous honours.

The Sound of Music, a Broadway production that has won seven Tony Awards and directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, made its premiere in India on May 4, 2023. The musical is scheduled to run through June 4, 2023, at Mumbai's newly opened Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC).

Set in 1930s Austria, the performance depicts the triumph of the human spirit over war via music, romance, and pleasure. With Eric Cornell serving as general manager and Simone Genatt and Marc Routh serving as executive producers, the classic production includes 26 well-known songs including "My Favourite Things," "Do Re Mi," "The Hills Are Alive," and "Sixteen Going on Seventeen."

Talking about the musical, Nita M Ambani, founder and chairperson of the cultural centre, said, “We are delighted to present ‘The Sound of Music’ as the first ever international Broadway musical in India, at the Cultural Centre. I have always believed art spreads hope and happiness. The Sound of Music is a joyful and timeless classic. I hope the people of Mumbai and India enjoy it with their families and children.”

The 2000-seat Grand Theatre located in NMACC is the location for the musical, which uses dramatic backdrops, a live orchestra, and on-stage singing to take the audience to Austria in the 1930s. The first-of-its-kind centre features the Art House, a four-storey dedicated visual arts space built as per global museum standards with the aim of housing an array of exhibits and installations from the finest artistic talent across India and the world.
