GOPIO discusses ‘Emerging world order’ with former ambassador T P Sreenivasan

The discussion was hosted in collaboration with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Tv Asia at NYC on May 18.

The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), New York Chapter, along with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, USA and TV Asia, hosted a discussion with the former ambassador T P Sreenivasan in New York city. The theme of the discussion was “Emerging world order”. The discussion was chaired and moderated by GOPIO chairman Thomas Abraham.

Sreenivasan, speaking on the occasion, quoted several global issues that require immediate attention and action, such as climate change. He raised severe concern about the scientific fact the global average temperature must not exceed 1.5 degree Celsius, but it is currently around 3.5 degree Celsius annually which would end the world in less than 200 years.

“One globally recognized aspect is that we are living in a world of transition. Change is the order of life, but we are currently in a critically bad phase due to certain developments in the 21st century,” the former ambassador remarked, also talking about the drastic effects of the COVID 19 pandemic and the failure of UN security council at times of need.

The Chairman of GOPIO, Abraham, briefly highlighted the formation and establishment of GOPIO. "During 1980s, Indian diaspora in several counties were subject to civil and human rights violation," he said, also highlighting dot-buster in the US. The Indian federation of Indian American Association held a convention in NYC in august 1989, which gathered around 3000 delegates for over a week, the conclusion of which resulted in the establishment of GOPIO, mainly for the NRIs and PIOs.

He also highlighted the significance of Indian contribution to High level positions in the Global Political. "we have come to political mainstream in many countries," he emphasized.

GOPIO International president Lal Motwani presented a memento of a collector’s item of the First Day Cover brought out by the US Postal Service at the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in 1989 to sreenivasan.
