Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament building in New Delhi on May 28, 2023. A Lok Sabha statement said that the speaker Om Birla extended an invitation to the Prime Minister for the inauguration.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new building which is expected to last 150 years,  took place on October 20, 2020, and the construction began on December 10 the same year. The project which took almost 2.5 years to reach completion, cost roughly US$110 million (Rs. 862 crores.)

The four-storey building spread over seven lakh square feet constructed by Tata Projects Limited has been designed by Ahmedabad-based HCP Design, Planning and Management. Situated opposite the existing Parliament, the new building can seat 1,272 MPs, 888 Lok Sabha and 384 Rajya Sabha members as against the present strength of 543 of the Lower and 250 for the Upper House.

The proposal for the new building was brought to the table for discussion in 2010 keeping in view growing concerns about the stability of the old building, which is  93-year-old, built by the British. The old building was also not adequate to house members and their staff.
