Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on May 29 had an interaction with the Indian diaspora in Nigeria, courtesy of an event organized by the Indian High Commission in Abuja. The gathering not only attracted attendees from Abuja but also drew members of the Indian community from other Nigerian cities, including Lagos.

During his address, the minister highlighted India’s rising significance on the global stage, attributed to its rapidly expanding economy and progressive government initiatives. Elaborating on the growing prominence of the Indian diaspora abroad he expressed appreciation for the positive contributions made by the Indian community in Nigeria and conveyed confidence in their ability to maintain a strong sense of Indian identity.

The minister underscored the government’s steadfast commitment to “Aatmanirbharta” (self-reliance) and commended the remarkable strides taken in defence exports, in line with the “Make in India, Make for the World” objective. He further lauded the formidable capabilities of the Armed Forces in effectively countering any potential threats or challenges posed by adversaries.

The minister engaged in discussions with senior Nigerian dignitaries, including the Chief Justice and Acting Minister of Defense, during a dinner hosted by the Indian High Commissioner.

His visit to Abuja was primarily to attend the inauguration ceremony of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. Nigeria serves as a home to over 50,000 Indians, with Indian-owned/operated companies and businesses ranking among the largest employers in the country.
