A 40-year-old woman of Indian origin was recently arrested by the Forsyth Police Department, Georgia, four years after she abandoned her baby in the woods and left it to die, according to County Sheriff Ron Freeman.

“How a parent and I happen to be one too, can do such a callous thing, is both incomprehensible to all of us, and is infuriating,” Sheriff Freeman said during a press conference following the day of the accused, Karima Jiwani’s arrest. “I’m dumbfounded by any reasoning that could be there, and how somebody could have the ability to leave their child to die.”

Freeman spoke about the Safe Haven Law which states mothers cannot be criminally charged if they leave their newborn babies with medical facility volunteers, at the fire or police station, or any place where these babies can be safely found. The sheriff noted how Jiwani did not attempt to ensure the safety of the child who was “thrown into the woods like a bag of trash.”

The baby, now aged 4 and named India, was recovered from the woods on June 6, 2019. Baby India was found by Deputy Terry Roper, wrapped in a plastic bag and the umbilical cord still attached.

Jiwani’s arrest was made by the same deputy who rescued baby India from the woods. A team of 40 deputies worked day in and day out on this case for years leading to the arrest. Jiwani is charged with Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder, Aggravated Assault, Reckless Abandonment, Cruelty to Children in the 1st Degree, and other charges.
