IIT Madras, University of Birmingham announce joint degree

The program's first semester will commence in July at IIT Madras, Chennai and following its completion, students will travel to Birmingham.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) and the University of Birmingham have announced a first-of-its-kind joint Masters program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. This is the first time an IIT has worked with a UK Russell Group university – the Ivy League equivalent of the UK – to jointly conduct these programs.

The Joint program was announced during Birmingham University’s vice chancellor, Professor Adam Tickell’s visit to Chennai in Nov. 2022. Tickell and Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras signed the intent agreement during their meeting followed by the signing of the MoU in February 2023, according to an IIT news release.

The Joint MSc in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, an 18-month course that will be taught at both institutions will commence at IIT Madras in July 2023. Selected students will have the opportunity to complete a short industrial placement during the first semester. They will head to Birmingham the following semester where they will have the option to choose between completing their education in the UK – this would require 12 months continuous stay – or return to Chennai to complete their research project and attend electives in Chennai.

Speaking on the unique aspects of the program, Tickell said, "Successful applicants will experience a global perspective as they learn the fundamental principles of data science and explore the world of AI. Our research-informed teaching will put students at the forefront of these rapidly evolving fields."

Kamakoti spoke about the collaboration, saying, "This is a great beginning for a long and fruitful association with the University of Birmingham. We look forward to several such engagements with the University, in various growth areas of IIT Madras."

Applications close on June 11, followed by an online test later that month. Shortlisted students will appear for an online interview, and those who clear will begin studying the program starting in July.
