Indian Women's hockey team emerges victorious in 2023 Torneo del Centenario

Indian women's hockey team clinches victory in Torneo del Centenario 2023, defeating Spain 3-0 in the finals.

The Indian women's hockey team emerged victorious in the three-nation Torneo del Centenario 2023 tournament held in Terrassa, Barcelona, by defeating hosts Spain by a 3-0 score on July 3.

Vandana Katariya opened the scoring for India in the 22nd minute, keeping the defence strong. Monika, who received a green card earlier, made a comeback to the field and extended India's lead in the 48th minute with a field goal. Indian defender Udita scored the last crucial goal just two minutes before the game ended to ensure a victory against Spain.

Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Government of Tamil Nadu, congratulated the team and shared his excitement for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy to be held in Chennai.

“My hearty congratulations to the Indian Women's Hockey team on winning the title in the 100th-anniversary #SpanishHockey Federation international tournament 2023. It was an amazing display of skill and spirit by the team. I wish them more success on the international stage. The win is all the more special as Chennai is all set to host the #AsianChampionsTrophyChennai 2023 in another 3 days,” he tweeted. 

The Indian women’s hockey team is coached by Janneke Schopman, a former Dutch field hockey player. The team that is currently ranked eighth in the International Hockey Federation’s women’s ranking, is preparing for the upcoming Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, scheduled from September 23 to October 8.
